The Verb DO

The use of the verb DO as an auxiliary verb is described in this material, with a brief description of the verb DO as a main verb. A list of the tense forms of the verb DO is provided at the end of this material.

The use of the verb DO in comparison with the use of the verb MAKE, including set expressions with these verbs, is described in Make and Do in the section Vocabulary. Lists of expressions with DO and MAKE are given in Verb Synonyms in the section Vocabulary.

Functions and forms: General information

The verb DO can function as an auxiliary verb: Do you speak English? No, I don't. The verb DO can also be a main verb: She does her homework in the evening. What are you doing?

The verb DO is often used as a substitute for other verbs to avoid repetition: She sings better than he does. Who said it? I did. The verb DO may be used to emphasize the meaning of other verbs: But I did tell you! Do visit us.

The verb DO is also used in a large number of set expressions. For example: do the dishes; do one's hair; do math; do a favor; do one's best; do good; do harm; do well; do without; that will do, etc.

The forms of the verb DO in the simple present: I/we/you/they do; he/she/it does. The verb DO is an irregular verb (do – did – done). Simple past form for all persons: did. Present participle: doing; past participle: done.

Negative forms and their contractions: do not, don't; does not, doesn't; did not, didn't. Full and contracted negative forms are widely used; full forms are considered preferable in formal style of writing.

DO as an auxiliary verb

As an auxiliary verb, DO performs grammatical functions and does not have a specific lexical meaning of its own. The main verb after the auxiliary verb DO is always used in the base form. Compare:

She lives here. Does she live here? No, she doesn't live here.

They went there last week. Did they go there last week? No, they did not go there last week.

The auxiliary verb DO helps to form questions and short affirmative and negative answers in the simple present and simple past. Full negative answers are also constructed with the help of DO.

Do you speak English? – Short answers: Yes, I do. No, I don't.

Full answers: Yes, I speak English. No, I don't speak English.

Does she know him? – Short answers: Yes, she does. No, she doesn't.

Full answers: Yes, she knows him. No, she does not know him.

Did he call her yesterday? – Yes, he did. No, he didn't.

Full answers: Yes, he called her yesterday. No, he didn't call her yesterday.

Didn't she help you? – Yes, she did. No, she didn't.

You understand it, don't you? – Yes, I do. No, I don't.

He saw them, didn't he? – Yes, he did. No, he didn't.

Where does he live? – He lives in Moscow. I don't know where he lives.

When did you talk to him? – I talked to him yesterday. I didn't talk to him.

Note: An auxiliary verb is not needed in questions to the subject. For example: Who locked the door? Who did it?

(For more examples of questions, see Word Order in Questions in the section Grammar.)

The verbs DO, BE, HAVE, WILL

The auxiliary verb DO helps main verbs to form questions and short answers in the simple present and simple past. In the other tenses, questions and short answers are formed with the help of the auxiliary verbs BE, HAVE, WILL. Compare:

He works at a bank. – Does he work at a bank? – Yes, he does. No, he doesn't.

He worked yesterday. – Did he work yesterday? – Yes, he did. No, he didn't.

He is working now. – Is he working now? – Yes, he is. No, he isn't.

He has worked here for five years. – Has he worked here for five years? – Yes, he has. No, he hasn't.

He will work tomorrow. – Will he work tomorrow? – Yes, he will. No, he will not. (No, he won't.)

The verb BE as a main verb or linking verb forms questions and answers in the simple present and simple past by itself.

She is in France now. – Is she in France now? She is in France now, isn't she? – Yes, she is. No, she isn't.

She was busy yesterday. – Was she busy yesterday? – Yes, she was. No, she wasn't.

The verb HAVE as a main verb needs the auxiliary verb DO to form questions and short answers in the simple present and simple past.

She has a car. – Does she have a car? – Yes, she does. No, she doesn't.

They had a party on Sunday. – Did they have a party on Sunday? – Yes, they did. No, they didn't.

(The use of the verbs BE and HAVE is described in the materials The Verb BE and The Verb HAVE in the section Grammar.)

Negative sentences

The auxiliary verb DO helps to form negative declarative sentences in the simple present and simple past.

I don't speak French.

She doesn't want to sell her car.

It doesn't matter.

We don't have much time.

They don't work on Saturdays.

You don't have to pay now.

He did not ask them about it.

She didn't answer.

They didn't know what to do.

Negative imperative sentences are formed with the help of "don't" (or "do not" in more formal speech).

Don't forget about it.

Don't call her today.

Please don't leave me alone.

Do not touch anything here.

Do not ask any questions.

Don't shout!

Don't be afraid.

Don't be late.

(For more examples of negative sentences, see Negative Constructions in the section Miscellany.)

DO as a substitute

The auxiliary verb DO is used as a substitute for the main verb to avoid its repetition (in the simple present and simple past).

She sings better than he does.

I know it better than you do.

You look much better today than you did yesterday.

Some like it; others don't.

They visit him quite often. – I know that they do.

Who opened the door? – I did.

He likes football, but his brother doesn't.

They didn't believe it, but I did.

I know him. – So do I.

I don't want to stay here. – Neither do I.

I saw him yesterday. – But I didn't.

(For more examples, see So do I. Neither do I. in the section Phrases.)

DO for emphasis

The auxiliary verb DO is sometimes used to emphasize the meaning of the main verb in the simple present and simple past. In such constructions, DO is stressed and stands before the base form of the main verb. The verb DO is used only in the affirmative form in such constructions.

The verb DO in this function is used to stress, contradict, confirm, or clarify; that is, such constructions are not used just to tell about some action. For example:

I'm sorry that he doesn't visit them. – But he does visit them.

Why didn't you tell me about it? – But I did tell you!

You do know him, don't you?

I do think that we should wait for him.

I'm sorry, but I really do have a lot of work today.

It does seem a little strange.

I think that he did see someone there.

If there is no necessity to emphasize the meaning of the main verb, don't use DO in such cases. Compare:

You do know him, don't you? – You know him, don't you?

Yes, I do believe him. – Yes, I believe him.

I'm sorry, but I do have to go. – I'm sorry, but I have to go.

Note: The auxiliary verbs BE, HAVE, WILL can emphasize the meaning of the main verb too (if necessary), but only by placing stronger stress on the auxiliary verb. For example:

He wasn't invited. – That's not true. He was invited.

Why haven't you done your homework? – But I have done it. Here it is.

We don't know whether he will come to the meeting. – He will come.

The verb DO may also be used to emphasize a request (in imperative sentences). DO in such constructions implies "please do it; please try to do what I ask". If there is no necessity to make an emphatic request, use "please", not DO. Compare:

Do visit us next week. – Please visit us next week.

Do sit down. – Please sit down.

Do have some more tea. – Please have some more tea.

Do take another piece of cake. – Please take another piece of cake.

Do be careful. – Please be careful.

DO as a main verb

As a main verb (principal verb), DO is a notional verb and has the following general main meaning: to perform some action. For example:

He does his work very well.

She does her homework in the evening.

What can I do for you?

What are you doing?

Have you done what I asked?

I did it yesterday. I'll do it tomorrow.

Do as I say. Do what I tell you.

Auxiliary and main verb DO

The auxiliary verb DO and the main verb DO (that is, the notional verb DO) often appear in one and the same sentence. In the examples below, the first DO is an auxiliary verb; the second DO is a main verb.

When do you do your homework?

What does she do on Sundays?

Did you do your homework yesterday?

What did you do yesterday?

Why did you do it?

Why didn't you do the dishes?

How did he do it?

He didn't do it.

Don't do it.

How do you do?

What do you do?

Grammar.)

Глаголы DO, BE, HAVE, WILL

(Употребление глаголов BE и HAVE описывается в материалах The Verb BE и The Verb HAVE в разделе Grammar.)

Miscellany.)

DO как заменитель

(т.е. А я не видел.)

(Посмотрите ещё примеры в материале So do I. Neither do I. в разделе Phrases.)

DO для усиления
