Novels, stories, fairy tales

The term "fiction" usually means "prose fiction" and refers to literary works in prose (for example, novels and stories), in which imaginary, fictional events and characters are described.

Note: The term "nonfiction" denotes narrative prose works based on facts and reality (for example, reference books, scientific literature, biographies).

A novel is a rather long narrative, with a complex plot and many characters. Kinds of novels: an adventure novel, a historical novel, a biographical novel, a detective novel, a psychological novel, and some others. Example: Oliver Twist is a novel by Charles Dickens; Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.

A story is shorter than a novel. Kinds of stories: a detective story, a love story, a ghost story, a horror story, and some others. Example: The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most famous detective stories in the world.

Note: "Detective story" is often used as a synonym for "detective novel"; "adventure story" may mean "adventure novel". The word "story" also has the meaning "plot" (of a novel, play, poem).

A short story is a short piece of prose fiction. Short stories (for example, fables and legends) may be the oldest form of prose fiction. Example: "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief" are short stories by O. Henry.

A fairy tale is a story (usually for children) about magic creatures (fairies, witches, dragons, etc.) and about magic deeds. Example: "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood" are fairy tales.

A folk tale is handed down by generations of people. Many fairy tales are folk tales. Example: "The Gingerbread Boy" (The Gingerbread Man) and "The Little Red Hen and the Grain of Wheat" are folk tales.

A legend is a traditional story about wonderful events and great deeds. Legends contain fictional elements but may have some historical basis, as, for example, the legends about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

A fable is a short story intended to teach a moral lesson. Often, the characters of a fable are animals that speak and act like people. Example: "The Fox and the Grapes" is one of Aesop's fables. (See Listening for Intonation: The Fox and the Grapes by Aesop in the section Phonetics.)

A fantasy is a novel or story about fictional supernatural events and characters. Example: Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien are considered to be fantasies.

Science fiction: Novels and stories about fictional, fantastic scientific developments, often about space travel. Example: Isaac Asimov is a famous science-fiction writer / a famous writer of science fiction.
