English personal names generally include a given name, a middle name, and a surname.
First name / given name (also, forename, Christian name) is a name that is given at birth and stands first in a person's full name, e.g., John, Peter, William, Anne, Elizabeth, Mary.
Middle name is the second name of a person. It stands between the first name and the family name. The middle name is usually represented by the middle initial in full names, for example, Alan Charles Jones or Alan C. Jones; Laura Tracey Edison or Laura T. Edison.
Last name / surname / family name is family name used by the members of the same family, for example, Smith, Higgins, Green, Appleby, Williamson, Mackenzie.
Nickname is a shortened or diminutive form of a given name, for example, Peter – Pete; William – Bill, Will; Anne – Annie, Nancy; Elizabeth – Betty, Liz; Louise – Lou. Many nicknames are also used as given names: Jack as a nickname for John and Jack as a given name in its own right; Molly as a nickname for Mary and Molly as an independent given name. Nicknames include pet names, for example, Billy, Willie, Betsy, Lizzie, Lulu.
Note: A nickname is also a substitute name that is given to a person for some reason (as description, characteristic feature, ridicule), for example, Big Jim, Chubby, Dusty, Monster, Shadow. A nickname is also a pseudonym that is used by Internet users for various purposes.
Look at these full names: James R. Brown and Susan P. Sawyer.
James, Susan – first name, given name;
Jim, Jimmy, Sue, Susie – common nicknames for the names James and Susan;
Brown, Sawyer – surname, last name, family name;
James R. Brown – R.: middle initial;
Susan P. Sawyer – P.: middle initial.
Birth name is the name at birth, i.e., the name the child is given at birth; a real, unchanged name (as compared with pseudonyms or acquired names).
Legal name is the name that is used for official purposes, for example, signing contracts. Legal name is usually the full name of a person as it appears on the birth certificate or in other official identifying documents.
Maiden name is a woman's surname before marriage. Sometimes a maiden name is also called birth name.
Married name is the name by marriage, i.e., a woman's surname after she gets married.
Patronymic In English, patronymic is family name / last name derived from the name of the father or ancestor by adding a certain suffix or prefix, for example, Johnson (son of John), Macdonald (son of Donald). When applied to Russian names, the word "patronymic" is used to denote the father's name that stands after the given name in a person's full name. But patronymic in Russian is not the same as either patronymic or middle name in English. It is considered incorrect to write Russian patronymics as one initial letter the way English middle names are usually written. Full Russian name should be written in English as Ivan Sidorov or Ivan Petrovich Sidorov but not as Ivan P. Sidorov.
Pseudonym is an assumed name, a fictitious name used instead of the real name. Pseudonyms include pen names, stage names, nicknames, aliases. Pseudonyms are often used by actors, singers, writers.
Examples:
He uses a pseudonym to write short stories, but he writes novels under his real name.
This author writes under a pen name.
He has several aliases. He travels under an alias of Smith.
a.k.a. – also known as: The police are looking for John Smith, a.k.a. Ben Little.
Many names can show masculine or feminine gender in their endings. For example, the names Alexandra, Antonia, Bertha, Christina, Eugenia, Frederica, Julia, Maria, Paula, Sophia, Victoria are clearly female names because of the feminine ending A or IA, while Alexander, Albert, Arthur, Christopher, David, Frederick, James, John, Julius, Paul, Richard, Victor are obviously male names because of their masculine endings ER, OR, US (or absence of the endings A, IA).
In many cases, the ending E marks feminine names: Caroline, Catherine, Charlotte, Christine, Adele, Beatrice, Florence, Francine, Gertrude, Lorraine. There are certain pairs of masculine and feminine names: Daniel (m.), Danielle (f.); Denis (m.), Denise (f.); Gabriel (m.), Gabrielle (f.); Gerald (m.), Geraldine (f.); Joseph (m.), Josephine (f.); Justin (m.), Justine (f.); Michael (m.), Michelle (f.); Nicholas (m.), Nicole (f.). But many male names have the ending E: Bruce, Clarence, Claude, Clyde, Eugene, George, Jerome, Jesse, Lawrence, Terence, Wayne.
Often, the endings IE and I mark the feminine forms of names, while Y marks the masculine forms of names, for example, Nicky as a man's name and Nikki, Nickie, Nicky as women's names. But there are many nicknames that use the endings IE and Y for both male and female names: Billie (m./f.), Billy (m./f.); Bobbie (m./f.), Bobby (m./f.); Freddie (m./f.), Freddy (m./f.). And there are quite a few male and female names with the ending Y. For example, Anthony, Emery, Gregory, Henry, Jeremy, Percy, Timothy are male names, while Daisy, Dorothy, Emily, Margery, Tiffany, Valery are female names.
Many other names traditionally belong to either male or female names. It is difficult to recognize them as male or female by their look. For example, Davis, Ellis, Elvis, Morris, Willis are male names, while Avis, Doris, Gladys, Iris, Mavis, Phyllis are female names; Damian, Fabian, Julian are male names, while Gillian, Lillian, Marian are female names. Alexis is used as a male name and as a female name. Christian, traditionally a male name, may also be used as a female name now.

A unisex name is the same gender-neutral name that is given to a boy or a girl.
There are many unisex nicknames in English: Alex for Alexander (m.) and Alexandra (f.); Andy for Andrew (m.) and Andrea (f.); Bobbie / Bobby for Robert (m.) and Roberta (f.); Chris for Christopher (m.) and Christine (f.); Connie for Conrad (m.) and Constance (f.); Mel for Melvin (m.) and Melanie (f.); Fran for Francis (m.) and Frances (f.).
Some unisex names are independent given name that have the same form for male or female names: Alexis (m./f.), Carol (m./f.), Gale (m./f.), Kelly (m./f.), Kimberly (m./f.), Lynn (m./f.), Tracy (m./f.).
There are also some given names that have become unisex recently. For example, previously male names Ashley, Casey, Jordan, Taylor are now also used as female names.

Names may have quite a few variants: Alice, Alicia, Alisa, Alissa; Allison, Alison, Allyson, Alyson; Gail, Gale, Gayle; Christopher, Kristopher; Leslie, Lesley; Steven, Stephen, Stephan, Stefan; Terence, Terrence.
Such names are not just spelling variants. They are separate names, and they should always be written in the correct variant, for example, in correspondence. When someone tells you his or her name or nickname, and you don't know how to spell it or want to know the full name for this nickname, you can ask:

What does Ettie stand for?
Is Nicky Nicole or Veronica?
