The Key to English Tenses: Adverbs of Time

English tenses are used with adverbs and adverbial phrases that indicate the time of the action, for example, "yesterday, now, often, tomorrow, an hour ago, last week". Adverbs of time and adverbial phrases of time are often called "expressions of time; time expressions" in English materials for language learners.

Certain adverbs of time and adverbial phrases of time require certain tenses. For example, if you say "yesterday" or "last week", you will use the past tense, not the future, right? The connection between the tense and its adverbs and adverbial phrases of time is very tight and can't be ignored. In fact, understanding this connection is the key to correct use of English tenses. For example:

I have just seen him.

I saw him a minute ago.

Maybe "I have just seen him" happened earlier than "I saw him a minute ago", but the first is the present perfect, and the second is the simple past, because "just" and "a minute ago" dictate the necessity to use these tenses.

So, there is a clear connection between the tense and its adverbs of time and adverbial phrases of time. This connection will help us to understand how English tenses are used. For example:

usually: Simple present

now: Present continuous

already: Present perfect

for three hours already: Present perfect continuous

yesterday: Simple past

Not all adverbs and adverbial phrases of time call for certain tenses. For example, the adverb "soon". You can say: He left soon. He will leave soon. The adverb "soon" doesn't call for a specific tense and doesn't help us to choose the tense correctly.

Native speakers sometimes omit expressions indicating time (if the context is clear) because the tense form itself conveys general information about the time of the action. For example, the sentences in the following pairs have practically the same meaning.

I buy bread in this store. (usually)

I usually buy bread in this store.

I am buying vegetables. (now)

I am buying vegetables now.

I have finished. (already)

I have already finished.

But language learners need to establish a clear connection between the tense and its adverbs of time. Learn the adverbs and adverbial phrases of time given in the materials on tenses in this section and use them as often as you can with the tenses that they require.

If there is no adverb of time in a sentence with a difficult tense, find out what adverb of time is meant and put it in. If there are two adverbs of time in a sentence, ask yourself which of them calls for this tense. For example, "often" may be used with all of the simple tenses but calls for the simple present tense.

I often go to the park.

I often went to the park last year.

I will probably go to the park often next year.

In the second sentence, "last year" calls for the simple past tense. In the third sentence, "next year" calls for the future tense.

Always analyze why this or that adverb of time is used in the sentence and in what meaning, and what adverb of time you should put in if it is not there. This will help you to understand what English tenses mean and how they work, and you will quickly learn how to use them correctly and confidently.

Various time expressions

Expressions indicating time are often represented by adverbs of time consisting of one word. For example: often; sometimes; rarely; never; always; now; just; already; still; yet; lately; recently; yesterday; today; tonight; tomorrow.

There are many expressions of time in the form of various combinations of adverbs, prepositions, nouns, adjectives, numerals. Such word combinations are used in the function of adverbs (in the function of the adverbial modifier of time in the sentence). They are called "adverbial phrases; phrasal adverbs" in English linguistic materials.

Examples of adverbial phrases of time: at present; at the moment; up to now; by now; so far; since yesterday; ever since; for a while; for three days; for a long time; from nine to six; this morning; this summer; this year; the day after tomorrow; next Friday; next week; in a few days; by the time; until recently; the day before yesterday; two days later; a month ago; a long time ago; three years ago; last week; last Saturday; last winter; in the past; in May; in 1985.

In a number of cases, a subordinate clause indicates the time of the action and helps us to choose the tenses in the sentence. For example: While I was reading his letter, the telephone rang. I will call you when I come back. I went for a walk after I finished writing my report.

The most common time expressions that can help us to choose the tenses correctly are indicated in the materials on English tenses in the section Grammar. They include adverbs of time, adverbs of frequency, adverbial phrases of time, and some prepositions and conjunctions.

Good knowledge of various expressions denoting time is necessary for understanding and using English tenses. (A list of frequently used time expressions is given in Typical Day in the section Vocabulary.)

Names of tenses. Groups of tenses

The names of the tenses include two parts: tense indicates the time of the action (present, past, future), and aspect (simple / indefinite, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous) indicates the manner in which the action is performed. Accordingly, the tenses can be divided into groups in two ways:

(1) Present tenses: the simple present, the present continuous, the present perfect, the present perfect continuous; (2) Past tenses: the simple past, the past continuous, the past perfect, the past perfect continuous; (3) Future tenses: the simple future, the future continuous, the future perfect, the future perfect continuous;

(1) Simple tenses: the simple present, the simple past, the simple future; (2) Continuous tenses: the present continuous, the past continuous, the future continuous; (3) Perfect tenses: the present perfect, the past perfect, the future perfect; (4) Perfect continuous tenses: the present perfect continuous, the past perfect continuous, the future perfect continuous.

Beginning learners should study the simple tenses first. After that it is usually convenient to study the tenses in pairs: the simple present and the present continuous; the simple past and the past continuous; then the present perfect and later on the present perfect continuous; the simple past and the past perfect.

Note that the tenses may be called differently in different textbooks. For example, the simple present / the present simple is also called the present indefinite; the simple past is also called the past indefinite. Continuous tenses are also called progressive tenses; for example, the past continuous is often called the past progressive.

The names of the tenses are generally not capitalized in English texts (the present continuous; the past perfect). The names of the tenses are usually capitalized in Russian materials on English grammar (Present Continuous; Past Perfect).

Note: The word "perfect"

Students sometimes ask about the word "perfect" in the names of the perfect tenses. The names of the tenses came from Latin. The Latin word "perfectus" means "done, completed, finished". For example, the name "past perfect" was derived from Latin "plus quam perfectum", which means "more than perfect", that is, earlier in the past than another past action.

The English adjective "perfect" has several meanings, including such meanings as "excellent; complete; finished, completed". The word "perfect" in the names of the perfect tenses means "finished, completed".

Also, there may be several variants of such names in Russian. For example, Russian variants of the name "present perfect tense". (See examples in the Russian text of this article.)

It is advisable for language learners to use the English names of the tenses (i.e., present continuous, present perfect, etc.), not their Russian translation. It is easier to study the tenses this way. (If necessary, you can find Russian translation of the names of the tenses in the materials on English tenses in the section Grammar.)

The most common tenses

One of my students once said, "I can't possibly learn 24 tenses!" That puzzled me. Where did he find 24 tenses? The student answered that he meant 12 tenses in the active voice and 12 tenses in the passive voice.

Actually, some tenses are not used at all (for example, the perfect continuous tenses are not used in the passive), and not all of the tenses are used in everyday speech. We will discuss all of them so that you can see the whole picture. The tenses that you should use actively in your speech and writing are listed below. (The word "some" in round brackets means that you need to know some of the use of the indicated tense.)

Active voice

Present: simple present; present continuous; present perfect; present perfect continuous;

Past: simple past; past continuous; past perfect (some);

Future: simple future; future continuous (some).

Passive voice

Present: simple present; present continuous (some); present perfect;

Past: simple past; past perfect (some);

Future: simple future.

That's six or seven tenses in the active and four in the passive for use in everyday speech. Plus two or three more for use in formal and business correspondence. Still more than in Russian, but we will learn them the easy way, with the help of the adverbs of time that give us the key to English tenses.

Note: Good knowledge of all English tenses is required for various tests of English that you might want to take.

Ключ к английским временам: Наречия времени

Английские времена употребляются с наречиями и наречными словосочетаниями, которые указывают время действия, например, "yesterday, now, often, tomorrow, an hour ago, last week" (вчера, сейчас, часто, завтра, час назад, на прошлой неделе).

Simple present

сейчас: Present continuous

уже: Present perfect

уже в течение трех часов: Present perfect continuous

вчера: Simple past

Во втором предложении "last year" вызывает время simple past.

(1) Времена в настоящем времени: simple present, present continuous, present perfect, present perfect continuous; (2) Прошедшие времена: simple past, past continuous, past perfect, past perfect continuous; (3) Будущие времена: simple future, future continuous, future perfect, future perfect continuous;

Названия времён обычно пишутся с маленькой буквы в английских текстах (the present continuous; the past perfect). Названия времён обычно пишутся с большой буквы в русских материалах по английской грамматике (Present Continuous; Past Perfect).

е. present continuous, present perfect и т.

Настоящее время: simple present; present continuous; present perfect; present perfect continuous;

Прошедшее время: simple past; past continuous; past perfect (кое-что);

Будущее время: simple future; future continuous (кое-что).

Страдательный залог (Пассивный залог)

Настоящее время: simple present; present continuous (кое-что); present perfect;

Прошедшее время: simple past; past perfect (кое-что);

Будущее время: simple future.

Это шесть или семь времён в активном залоге и четыре в пассивном для употребления в разговорной речи. Плюс ещё два или три для употребления в официальной и деловой переписке. Всё равно больше, чем в русском языке, но мы их выучим лёгким способом, с помощью наречий времени, которые дают нам ключ к английским временам.

Примечание: Хорошее знание всех английских времён требуется для различных тестов по английскому языку, которые вы, возможно, захотите пройти.
