English Articles: Foreword

English articles include the indefinite article "a" (an) and the definite article "the". Articles are used with nouns. The choice of an article depends on the type of noun and its meaning and also on the context.

Types of nouns

Nouns can be divided into two main groups: proper nouns (Mary Smith, England, the Missouri River, Monday) and common nouns (a girl, a house, a notion, a habit, water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health).

Proper nouns, also called proper names, include people's names (James Ashton, Mary Smith), geographical names (England, the Missouri River), names of companies and organizations (the United Nations, Harvard University), names of nationalities (an Italian, the Dutch), names of months and weekdays (August, Monday), and many other notions, objects, and places that are capitalized and used as names.

Common nouns are divided into countable nouns (a girl, three girls, a house, two houses, several notions, different habits) and uncountable nouns (water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health).

Countable nouns are subdivided into concrete nouns (a girl, a house) and abstract nouns (a notion, a habit). Countable nouns with regular plural form add the ending s/es to form the plural. Irregular plural forms of nouns are described in Irregular Plural Nouns in the section Writing.

Collective nouns (a family, a crowd, a herd, the public, the police) are a subgroup of countable nouns; they are singular in form but denote groups of people or animals regarded as a unit or as individual members of the group. (Collective nouns are described in Agreement in the section Grammar.)

Uncountable nouns are divided into concrete nouns / mass nouns (water, cheese, furniture) and abstract nouns (time, information, health). The main distinguishing feature of uncountable nouns is that they can't be counted; consequently, they can't be used in the plural. Some uncountable nouns can be used as countable, with a different meaning (glass – a glass, time – three times), and there are other cases in which uncountable nouns can turn into countable nouns.

Use of articles with different types of nouns

The indefinite article a/an is used with countable nouns in the singular. The indefinite article a/an is not used with uncountable nouns. (But there are special cases in which uncountable nouns are used as countable nouns.) The main function of the indefinite article is to name one item belonging to a class of similar items.

The definite article "the" can be used with countable nouns in the singular and plural as well as with uncountable nouns. The main function of the definite article is to point out a noun and to make it definite and specific.

The indefinite article is rarely used with proper names. The definite article can be used with certain proper names.

Difficulties in studying articles

English articles are difficult for us because there are no articles in Russian. Students often have a problem deciding where and which article to use.

Students sometimes try to avoid this problem by not using any articles with nouns. For example, they use "my, his, her, our, your, their, some, any" instead of the articles. Though it may be a fitting substitute in a number of cases, this method doesn't work everywhere. Here is an example of how students try to avoid articles, and how strange it may sound.

Strange: I went to my kitchen, made my coffee, ate some sandwich, washed some dishes, and left for my work.

Normal: I went to the kitchen, made coffee, ate a sandwich, washed the dishes, and left for work.

You need to know how to use articles; you can't avoid them or do without them in English. You won't see many "some, any" in the examples in the materials on articles. This was done on purpose, so that you could clearly see where and which article to use.

Students also say that the rules of the use of articles do not seem logical to them, and the worst thing is that in many cases either variant is possible (a/an or the), or even any of the three variants is possible (a/an, the, or no article), and this is very confusing.

Yes, variants are possible in many cases, but the meaning of the noun changes when the article changes.

He is a doctor.

He is the doctor I told you about.

There is a book on the table.

The book is on the table.

This vase is made of glass.

The glass this vase is made of is called Venetian glass.

Where are my glasses?

Could you give me a glass of water?

The use of articles with different types of nouns is described in the materials of this section. Basic rules of the use of articles are described in the materials Articles: Countable Nouns, Articles: Uncountable Nouns (Parts 1, 2). Specific use of articles is described in the materials Specific Use of THE, Specific Use of a/an (Parts 3, 4). Articles in set expressions (Part 5) should be learned by heart as such, because set expressions may not follow the rules of the use of articles.

The other three materials in this section (Parts 6, 7, 8) show the patterns of article use with proper nouns, including names of people, geographical places, companies, schools. These patterns fall into separate groups (e.g., rivers, streets, parks, museums, holidays), and the names in these materials are real. The best way to study them is by comparing the examples under the two headings: No article; Article the. This will help you to understand and memorize their patterns of use and exceptions.

Some students formulate helpful tips on the use of articles with geographical names. For example:

The name of a river, a sea, an ocean – the definite article; the name of a lake – no article.

The name of a mountain – no article; the name of a mountain chain – the definite article.

Start with Part 1 and go through the materials on articles step by step. Don't jump to the materials ahead; study them in the given order. You will see the logic in the rules and patterns of article usage, and this will help you to master English articles. And don't forget to do the exercises in the subsection Exercises for Articles. They will help you to check how well you understand the use of articles.

Английские артикли: Предисловие

Английские артикли включают в себя неопределённый артикль "a" (an) и определённый артикль "the". Артикли употребляются с существительными. Выбор артикля зависит от типа существительного и его значения, а также от контекста.

Типы существительных

Существительные можно разделить на две основные группы: имена собственные (Mary Smith, England, the Missouri River, Monday) и нарицательные существительные (a girl, a house, a notion, a habit, water, cheese, furniture, time, information, health).

Имена собственные включают имена людей (James Ashton, Mary Smith), географические названия (England, the Missouri River), названия компаний и организаций (the United Nations, Harvard University), названия национальностей (итальянец, голландцы), названия месяцев и дней недели (August, Monday) и многие другие понятия, предметы и места, которые пишутся с заглавной буквы и употребляются как названия.

Нарицательные существительные делятся на исчисляемые существительные (a girl, three girls, a house, two houses, several notions, different habits) и неисчисляемые существительные (sugar, water, furniture, time, information, health).

Исчисляемые существительные подразделяются на конкретные / вещественные (a girl, a house) и абстрактные / отвлеченные (a notion, a habit). Существительные с правильной формой множественного числа образуют мн. число, прибавляя окончание s/es. Неправильные формы мн. числа описаны в статье Irregular Plural Nouns в разделе Writing.

Собирательные существительные (a family, a crowd, a herd, the public, the police) – подгруппа исчисляемых существительных; они в единственном числе по форме, но обозначают группы людей или животных, рассматриваемые как единое целое или как индивидуальные члены группы.

Например, они употребляют my, his, her, our, your, their, some, any вместо артиклей.

Specific Use of THE, Specific Use of a/an (Части 3, 4).
